Remembering Tyler Lewis, a young life taken too soon

The family of Tyler Lewis, a 19-year-old Buffalo State College student, is taking legal action against both University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College following Lewis' tragic death in a stabbing incident on the University at Buffalo campus last October. The lawsuit alleges that the universities failed to provide a safe and secure environment, failed to properly vet students prior to admission, and admitted students with a known history of violence. The family is seeking $10 million in damages.

"He was an amazing young man, he did not deserve this," said close friend Caryn Tatham. "We need to know what happened because it should not happen on a college campus."

University at Buffalo's police department continues to investigate the incident, with the help of witnesses who saw the altercation. The school has identified one person of interest, described as a white male between 19 and 22 years old with light brown hair and a medium build, who was seen leaving the scene in a black four-door sedan.

Buffalo State College released a statement mourning the loss of Lewis and offering condolences to his family and friends. "We want justice for Tyler, this was his freedom education was key," said Tyler's aunt, Tiffany Lewis. "He came from a long line of educators and going to college, being the only grandchild and only son, it's more than the family can bear."

Both universities are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact University at Buffalo Police at (716) 645-2222. University at Buffalo police, with assistance from local law enforcement, is making progress in identifying individuals involved in the altercation and urges anyone with information to come forward.
