Meet Judge Jan E. DuBois: Senior Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Jan E. DuBois is a Senior United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He was appointed to the court in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan and assumed senior status in 2002.
Born in Philadelphia in 1931, Judge DuBois received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952 and his law degree from Yale Law School in 1957. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954.
After working as a clerk for a federal appeals judge and in private practice in Philadelphia for over 30 years, Judge DuBois was nominated to the federal bench. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in July 1988 and has been on the bench ever since.
Judge DuBois has presided over several noteworthy cases during his time on the bench. In 2010, he issued an order to the Lower Merion School District to stop using webcams on school-issued MacBook computers to spy on students. He also presided over the case Robbins v. Lower Merion School District, where he awarded $1.37 million in damages to a fan injured during a Fishbone concert.
Now in his 90s, Judge DuBois remains an active judge on the federal bench, presiding over cases in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
